Located here, in Washington State, the Hanford Nuclear Facility, which produced plutonium for U.S. nuclear weapons. During it's operation between 1944 and 1990, "Hanford" had various environmental radiation releases.
A few thousand people, now known as "Downwinders", who were exposed to the radiation releases between 1944 and 1965, filed suit in 1990 against the former contractors, including DuPont whom operated the Hanford Facility from 1943-1946 and GE, General Electric, whom operated Hanford from 1946-1965.
A final date for Trial has been set for April 25, 2005 by Judge Wm. Fremming Nielsen, after all "Downwinder" cases had been consolidated into one. The Case now known as "In re Hanford Nuclear Reservation Litigation (CV-91-3015-WFN) is considered a bellwether trial comprised of 7 plaintiffs with thyroid diseases.
The trial will be held in Spokane, Washington, and is open to the public with around 70 available seats, on a first come, first served basis. The proceedings will be held on the Ninth Floor of the Spokane Federal Building, located at W 920 Riverside Avenue.
